July 31, 2006I had a good story...I had a good story, but I seem to have lost it. The other day Gavin did something and I remember saying I had to write about it, but now I can't remember what I was going to write. Go figure. I'm fifteen-ish weeks along in this pregnancy so far. Just like last time, the first few weeks crept along agonizingly slowly, but are beginning to speed up now. Unlike last time, though, I am much less uptight and anxious about the pregnancy. Although I am growing increasingly excited at the prospect of having a wee baby again, it is still dampened by experience, and nothing like the unbridled enthusiasm of last time... the difference between a first and a second time mama. The first trimester was a breeze, relatively speaking. Where last time I had some pretty good nausea all day every day for weeks, this time the nausea was here and there and only lasted a few weeks. My most noticeable symptoms of pregnancy has been boobular soreness and tiredness. But even the tiredness wasn't that bad. I think it helped that I took a 2 hour nap almost every day with Gavin. They say moms feel baby move earlier the second time around, but seeing as I felt the first Gavin-squiggles at 12-13 weeks, I doubted I would. I was so surprised when I felt this one at 10 weeks. I've now felt a few good thumps from it (him? her? we won't know until January!). I'm waiting for the kicks to grow stronger. I read through my journal from Gavin and oddly enough can't see any mention of when I started feeling him kick all the time. I'm having a bit of a doula conundrum this time around. Since I know so many doulas now, and know them so well, I can't decide which of them to have at this birth. If I could I'd have several, as each of my good doula friends have qualities I would love to have around me. I know I have time, but the planner in me wants to know NOW who I'm having. But the rational part of me knows there's time and is willing to wait until I have sorted things out in my head. In the last couple of weeks we have started talking about the baby to Gavin. He knows there's a baby in my tummy, but it's still just a bunch of words. Still, he'll occasionally give the baby a hug and a kiss if I ask him to. The other day Jason asked him what's in Mommy's tummy and he said "A baby." Then after thinking about it a moment, he went on, "Peoples have baby in they tummies." I've asked him a few times whether he's having a baby sister or brother (sometimes I say boy baby or girl baby). The first time he said baby sister. The most recent time he said a boy sister. They say siblings somehow know these things, so what are we supposed to make of that?!

July 13, 2006HoseThe other afternoon Gavin played with the hose after I watered the flowers out front. I actually weeded the entire front landscaping, something I've had no interest in all summer. And no energy for either. But the jungle-esque nature of the front yard finally got to me, and with the smidgeon of energy I had to spare for the week, I weeded. Why so little energy, you might ask? Well, since you asked, I suppose I should tell you that Gavin's going to be a big brother. The little sib will arrive sometime in late-ish January. Surprise! Now that the cat's out of the bag, I'll say that I had a visit with the OB -- a different one from last time, but not the one I'm staying with -- on Tuesday and all is well. Baby's heartbeat was 160. I've been feeling fluttery movements for a week or more, so I was pretty sure everything was all right, but it was such a big relief when the nurse finally located the little pitter-patter in my belly. Next week we meet with the midwives again, the ones who will actually be at the birth of our baby. We'll continue to see an OB, but we'll have to switch to the one who does backup for our midwives. I'm not thrilled about it, as this doc is a half hour drive from our house. But that's the one we have to go to if we want OB backup. A little Gavin funny from tonight. I have a headache and after getting Gavin ready for bed, I headed downstairs for a couple of Tylenol while Jason took over to help him fall asleep. Gavin asked for me and Jason told him I went to get some tylenol for my headache. Naturally, Gavin wanted some. He was told no he didn't have a headache so he didn't need it. A minute later, Gavin said, "Gavin have headache. Gavin need tylenol. Uh-huh, uh-huh, headache."
